Web access fears as iPhone buyers await launch

The Guardian: "Experts said they were concerned that buyers in rural areas could be paying over the odds, since the higher-speed network that the iPhone uses to surf the web will cover only a third of Britain by the time the gadget goes on sale.
"We think that this is simply inadequate and will frustrate a lot of users," said Martin Garner, of industry analyst Ovum. "It could be problematic for O2." Users outside major urban areas could be forced to pay large sums for "unlimited internet access" but only be able to use slower, older web connections. Some potential customers said it had put them off the idea of buying an iPhone altogether.
"I really want to combine my iPod and mobile internet access," said Iain Wright, a nursing assistant from Inverness. "But since it uses a network that isn't available where I live, it's basically something I can never use.""

UK mobiles are highest text users in Europe

Guardian Unlimited: "An average of 100 text messages are sent by UK mobile users each month.

That compares with an average of 65 for Germans, but both the UK and
Germany far outstrip customers in the US, where the average mobile
phone user sends only 32 texts each month.

The study also showed that the British are more inclined to use their
mobile phones for texting than for talking. UK mobile owners dedicate
less than half their mobile usage to direct conversation.

On average, they make only 76 calls each month, far fewer than the 137 calls made by their Russian and Greek counterparts.

O2 wins Apple iPhone deal

At a hefty price: "O2 is understood to have agreed a margin on the retail price - to be confirmed tomorrow - but will return to Apple as much as 40% of any revenues it makes from customers' use of the device."
They've got to install edge technology, Apple may cut the retail price and hence O2's chunk, Carphone Warehouse brought in to help boost retail sales. T-Mobile in Germany, Orange in France. .
